Working out in public can take many forms. Much like pumping iron at the beaches people walk by - when you post work in progress drawings to your Tumblr or Twitter accounts people see you putting in effort.

When is that an advantage? When does practicing illustration in public contribute to your training instead getting in the way? Does it ever slow your training down or is it always a power-up?

Talking about writing with images on the LIA Cast!

Visual writing shares many of the concerns of prose writing. We want our characters to register. We hope the dialogue rings true. We work hard to create interesting plots that act upon and respond to the inner lives of our characters.

But when one decides to be a visual writer they're introduced to another array of storytelling tools, and these tools challenge us to use them intentionally. A visual writer must think about composition, visual pacing, character “acting”, and staging.

How does an artist navigate all of those choices? What methods of idea capture and refinement seem to work for a visual storyteller?

Rob recently shipped his new iOS game, This Panda Needs You, which he quietly worked on for 2 years. He chronicled the experience on his blog, highlighting how the tools and methods used in completing a long-term project can change mid-stream, and how not talking about the project publicly can be so challenging.
